My parents were the same, they just got bad advice and were against sign language. They loved me just the same though and just talked real slowly. Sign language would have been handy in picking up girls in college though, nobody likes dating anyone who can barely grunt out his ABC's like a neatheral.

I don’t get this stigma for deafness, it’s not the child’s fault and the solution is already there, sign language! What’s so difficult about that? The son already picked up some simple words, and not to mention you can just gesture + point and make some simple movements on your own for basic things. That’s your own child ffs, don’t you want to communicate with her and help her out? Libby is such a bright and lovely child with great potential, just a little of extra help and she can achieve a great deal, what’s the BS with her not being able to find a job? Big fat bunch of crap! It’s not like the family is poverty stricken and cannot afford some sign language lessons. A bit of professional help plus more patience in day to day life, that’s all. Sickening to see adults evade responsibility like this and push kids into meaningless and utterly necessary sufferings! Literally! And it’s so stupid! Helping your child is also helping yourself, makes life much easier if Libby gets right support and blend into school successfully. You don’t support her then her issue never got solved and keep coming back more and more serious

This was a hard one to watch. My biological children (all 4 of them) had hearing difficulties. Thankfully, their hearing was restored with a simple surgery that repaired the eardrum. I still remember my oldest going home from the hospital kept looking around as we walked to the car. She kept asking me what was that. I didn't know what she was talking about. After a little more questioning, we determined that she had heard a bird singing for the very first time. I knew that she had problems before but didn't realize it had gotten to this extent. I sat in the parking lot and held her and cried. Even now those tears of happiness slow down my cheeks. Thank you for the short. I'm glad it won an award and has been posted here. That day with my daughter was one of the happiest I've ever had.

Don't worry my dears, there will be a continuation of that movie! There you can see that Libby's brother is so shocked about the situation that he will just break with his career and learn to become a deaf Therapist. In that course he will teach his sister the sign language and help her to grow. Because of that the family will get so mad, that Libby and her brother will move out into a small apartment to get rid of this toxic environment. You will see - great crisis make great people!!!

There was a little deaf girl I used to work with in equine therapy. I remember the very first day of class like it was yesterday. She wanted to know her horse’s name. I tapped her on the shoulder and signed, “Sunflower.” Her face light up when she realized that I could speak her language. She burst into a flood of signing- by far more than I could keep up with! I had to tell her to slow down and say it again. She wanted to know what the other horse’s name was. “Bear.” Why does Sunflower have a purple lead rope??? Well, I think that’s her favorite color. On and on we went. These kids are humans too- they deserve no less than the other groups out there yelling for their rights.

Sometimes it feels like people having normal ability of hearing are deaf by heart. They are unable to understand what their family, loved ones....want from them. They impose fucking society rules just to show their power. Even being a normal human, there was a time when I felt alone like the girl in this short movie feels in the end. All alone!.....

Lord, give them eyes to see. Let children have options that need special assistance and help. It is very challenging for them. Surround them with supports and help in areas they need. Life is different for them and we have to support them, they should not be "lost". The hardest part is many families are dsyfunctional like hers. Parents don't see their child, invest in their child and make discouraging statements, not encouraging words and engagement.

I teach 6 and 7 grades, I've been hoping to learn sign language since a young age but was told I didn't need to because I can hear perfectly well... I had a friend then a younger cousin who were deaf. Nobody around these kids ever bothered learning sign language. I think it should be counted as a second language from primary onwards. I thought the basis to my daughter. Can't find a school that teaches it. What a blast.

Recently I’ve been talking to my parents about how instead of learning speaking languages such as French, Spanish etc in school, We should learn Sign language. You never know when u might come across someone who is deaf. It’s a great skill to learn. Knowing French isn’t going to help me in life. Knowing Spanish isn’t going to help me in life. But sign language could help someone who is in trouble. 9:40 that’s why we should learn it more

Absolutely heartbreaking. How many children don't fullfill their abilities because parents are too "blind" to see and do what's best for the child, and not themselves. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wanted to hug that child and run away with her.

As someone who is hearing impaired and wore a hearing aid, went to mainstream schooling and was never taught American Sign Language, I feel this film profoundly. It's quite common for doctors, schools, parents to all think it's best for deaf children to integrate into the hearing world and be "okay" with lip reading and learning to speak. They are not recognizing the need for our own culture and language to be integrated into our lives. We miss out on a whole world of our own culture when they caught that off from us. I am learning ASL now, as an adult and teaching my husband slowly. I hope one day to be fully fluent and somehow be apart of the deaf culture around me. I feel intimidated and worry I may not fit in, but I want this so badly. Also, if our children had lived and if any of them had been deaf, we would've never considered a cochlear implant. It just wouldn't have been an option we would've considered. Think more about your child's needs, rather than what you want for that child to be "normal".

the family is not consciously careless, but they approach their life with this lovely girl in a very wrong and sad way. They believe there's something wrong, incomplete and this is why the mother (and society) wants her to speak. They want all others to be the same, being complete (and perfect as the mother says) means, speaking and acting like all the others, so called able people. Isn't it amazing how little we have evolved? All the technology, knowledge and wisdom and we are not able (let alone willing) to accept that we are all different. I am wearing hearing aids otherwise the world is pretty silent for me and how grateful am I for this.

Wow this really hurt my feelings. She was thriving with sign language and her parents didn’t care that it helped her. Sad to say that I’ve had kids in my school that didn’t understand English and were forced to sit for exams that they didn’t even understand. Nobody, not even the teacher would try to help them. Instead I could tell that they saw them as liabilities, as one extra step that they weren’t willing to take. I often wonder how many children are truly being overlooked in their homes and schools because they aren’t considered “normal.”
