NOTIFICATION SQUAD: The end of an era! The most action-packed, ridiculous series we've seen on Abroad in Japan, filled with volcanoes, airplanes, horses, abandoned islands and even an iTunes chart topping hit. A big thank you to you all for watching along. It's a tough series to beat, but perhaps we can make it happen later on this year (once I've recovered from this one). And a special thanks to the Abroad in Japan Patreon community for turning this mad idea into a reality ( www.patreon.com/abroadinjapan ). Now go back and re-watch the entire series! 2 hours of back-to-back mayhem! debins.info/white/PLSOR9_iNzVflGF8OZwBqYH4mxDXvlkpSX

I love that Dr. Jelly's still getting electrocuted for no apparent reason. Makes me think that every product he sells is basically the same energy jelly from the original, so Chris is slathering his hands and messing up his hair with the same jelly he eats.

Since you talked so much about history, I'm disappointed that you didn't mention anything about the forced labor on Hashima Island. During WWII, like many other places in Japan Hashima Island was a place of forced labour (specifically, Korean people). The Japanese government tried to make this island a UNESCO heritage site but it was denied and they promised to honor the victims. However, rather than keep their promise they have received false/biased testimonies and are trying to erase the abuse from history (much like the other history they don't like to talk about such as comfort women). As a Korean person, I can't help but be disappointed that you chose to leave out this part of history since the jp gov is already trying to cover it up. If you want more info you can simply search Hashima Island on Google or refer to articles like the one below. thediplomat.com/2020/06/remembering-japans-colonial-abuses-against-koreans-on-hashima-island/ koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2021/07/12/national/diplomacy/hashima-unesco-japan/20210712182100285.html en.people.cn/n3/2017/0720/c90000-9244377.html www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/03/battleship-island-a-symbol-of-japans-progress-or-reminder-of-its-dark-history I usually love your videos but I hate to say that I was truly saddened and disappointed this time.

Is that North Korean anti-Japanese propaganda? Aren't you ashamed to tell such lies? Those articles are based on false testimonies from Koreans, so no one can trust them. Don't you know that Taiwanese wartime workers are very grateful to Japan, unlike Koreans? And a Korean professor says it's a downright lie. debins.info/dash/qH9stYGpgsmcgpU/video.html

(pls spread this) Soooooooo the island that you guys all know as the battleship island was powered with the coal industry as Chris explained, but you guys also need to know that the manpower that ran the coal industry was workers from the colony that japan had at that time which was mostly Koreans. Even UNESCO that decides world heritage agreed to make its heritage with the conditions explaining the history behind the island's economy. But the Japanese government did not do what they said in the first place and hiding all of the inhuman actions to its workers, having UNESCO sending messages to the Japanese government regard with this issue. Personally, if they hide history it should never be a heritage since there is no meaning in having it as heritage if you don't learn anything from it

By the way, before it became mandatory towards the end of the war, the exact same labor was one of their dream jobs, very popular work to apply among Koreans (actually any jobs in Japan at that time) and very hard to secure (like one in 50 applicants) so that so many Koreans resorted to smuggling themselves into Japan just looking for better life. But yes, being a coal miner is indeed one of the hardest working condition jobs not only for Koreans but for Japanese as well or anyone in the world, but it was indeed the profession that the former residents on this island took a lot of pride in. Some Koreans even oversaw the whole operation and lead over Japanese workers especially when more and more Japanese men were taken into the military service. Here’s the testimony by a former Korean professor Lee Woo-yeon at the UN: "No Koreans were abducted and made to work like slaves. Many went to Japan voluntarily, wages were paid impartially to all workers Japanese and Koreans alike and they lived a free and easy life." You can find it on DEbins as well.

The words 徴用 or 強制労働 for those laborers the Japanese used should have been translated into English as “mandatory labor (service)” instead of “forced labor”. Just like the military service is mandatory (against the will) in South Korea today, there were mandatory labor for both Japanese and Koreans as a Japanese citizen at that time (and many Japanese men were drafted to the military instead of labor and killed) by the appropriate law enacted at the time There is a movie called the battleship is more Koren movie heavily based on one old man testimony which is oddly inconsistent, or some Korean storybooks that drew their children locked up in a dark dungeon like but in reality they were instead bullying Japanese kids in the classroom. They even used a fake graffiti that some movie crews wrote on the wall. Koreans were like eating a lot of pork dishes on the paydays even some Japanese families could not afford at that time. They were all well paid (at least more than what they earned back in Korea) and it offered much higher standard of living - their children attended school on the island while they could not before, they even had their own “Korean men only” brothel on the island. They frequented movie theaters on their day-offs and participated in every festival held on the island dancing and singing "Jotta Jotta" in their traditional outfits… They became richer and loads of records show them transferring money back home and their payroll records examined by scholars who wrote the best seller book in South Korea called Anti-Japan Tribalism.
